Okuma Jaw 40 Spinning Reel

A straightforward front-drag spinning reel in the size most people use for pike, big perch and general lure work. The 40 is the middle of the Jaw range and the one that suits a 2.4 to 2.7 metre lure rod.

The drag is a multi-disc stack running on Japanese oiled felt washers and gives up to 8kg, which is more than enough for anything you are likely to hook on braid. Underneath, a machine-cut brass pinion drives it at 5.0:1, and the graphite body and rotor keep the weight down and the corrosion out.

The spool is machined anodised aluminium, so it takes braid straight without a mono backing chewing into it, and the bail wire is stainless.
