Guru MWG Barbless Hooks

MWG stands for Match Wide Gape, and this is the pattern most anglers end up defaulting to. It is built heavier than a standard match hook, so it copes on the day a proper carp turns up while you are fishing for silvers.

The oversized eye is the detail that earns it. It takes thicker hooklength material without crowding the knot, which matters when you step the gear up for feeder, waggler or pole work.

Maggots, meat, pellets, boilies, sweetcorn – the shape handles all of them.

Which size?

• Size 12 – the largest of the three. Meat, corn and bigger pellets, and the one to reach for when carp are the target.
• Size 14 – the middle ground and the most useful all round. Start here if you are unsure.
• Size 16 – for smaller hook baits and mixed nets where silvers are part of the plan.
