Drennan Vertex 4000 Feeder Reel (Rear Drag)

The Vertex 4000 is Drennan's all-round feeder reel. This is the rear drag version, with the clutch dial set into the back of the body rather than on the spool, and the adjustment is incremental rather than a quarter-turn from loose to locked.

The spools are deliberately shallow, so there is no need to pack them out with backing before the line goes on. Line lay, casting distance and accuracy all follow from that. Three spools come in the box – one alloy and two composite – each printed with exactly what it holds.

The handle folds away at one touch, which is the difference between a made-up rod that goes in the holdall and one that has to be stripped down. A stainless spring-loaded line clip pins the cast, and the rubber buttons push into the spool skirt so you can tell at a glance which line is on which.

The three spools

• 44mm – 100m of 0.28mm, or 90m of 0.30mm.
• 45mm – 100m of 0.23mm, or 90m of 0.26mm.
• 46mm – 100m of 0.18mm, or 90m of 0.20mm.
