Drennan Specialist XT Maggot Barbed Eyed Hooks

The Specialist XT Maggot is Drennan's maggot and natural bait pattern, made here in an eyed version rather than a spade end. A swept crystal bend sits the bait right below the point instead of hanging off the back of the shank, and that on its own accounts for a lot of the bites that would otherwise be missed.

It is a fine wire hook, but the steel and the forging make it far stronger than the gauge suggests, and the curved point is still sharp after a net full of fish. A slick PTFE coating keeps the glare off the wire in bright, clear water.

Which size?

• Size 10 (0.54mm) – the largest and thickest wire of the five, for bigger baits and better fish.
• Size 12 (0.485mm) – a step down, and a sound all-rounder on the feeder or the waggler.
• Size 14 (0.435mm) – the middle of the range, and where to start if you are undecided.
• Size 16 (0.41mm) – finer wire for smaller baits and fish that are being careful.
• Size 18 (0.37mm) – the finest we stock, for single maggot and clear water.
